Color Correction and Color Grading

Common to the visual communication vocabulary, they are often clubbed together and used interchangeably. However, they are two separate services and it is important to have a brief overview of each.
In visual storytelling, there are two main types of color manipulation techniques. Color correction and color grading are similar in process, yet are distinctive in how and why they are used.
Color Correction
Color correction is a single step process that involves making changes to an image/clip to correct any inconsistencies from its standard appearance. These may include:
- Exposure Levels
- Brightness & Contrast
- White Balance
- ISO
Color correction is used to cover errors made with camera settings or uneven lighting on set. It is also carried out to give your footage a uniform look and create a cohesive tone.
Color Grading
Color Grading is a multi-step process that can change the visual tone of the whole film. Upon color correcting your footage, you can work on its thematic and aesthetics by way of:
- Matching Shots
- Shape Masks
- Removing/Adding Objects
- Providing Cinematic Looks such as flashbacks, day-to-night, etc.
Grading is a more high-end process in comparison to color correction; it is used to create specific looks/tones customized to your brand personality and its colors.
